“…Exemplifies the power of music to help overcome soul-sapping adversity, as befits a man who grew up in poverty but could earn free admission to movies and sporting events as a child, simply by breaking into a song, any song, with his already luminous voice.” – U-T San Diego, George Varga
As leader of the Neville Brothers, Aaron Neville’s name is synonymous with New Orleans soul. His inimitable voice has graced hits such as “That’s What My Love is For” and GRAMMY® winning duets with Linda Ronstadt (“Don’t Know Much,” “All My Life”) and Trisha Yearwood (“I Fall to Pieces”). Now, the voice of New Orleans comes to Poway for an intimate holiday show.
Aaron Neville started his career as leader of the Neville Brothers that played New Orleans soul. He performed “That’s What My Love is For” and GRAMMY® winning duets with Linda Ronstadt (“Don’t Know Much,” “All My Life”) and Trisha Yearwood (“I Fall to Pieces”).
But it wasn’t till his second single that Neville experienced at least a fleeting taste of stardom. “Tell It Like It Is” became a No. 2 pop hit and No. 1 R&B smash. And then there was no follow-up, “because the record company went defunct.” But still… “Guys would come back from the war and say, ‘Man, that was all you heard in Vietnam.’ I got to tour with OtisRedding and tear the Apollo Theatre up. That was cool, but meanwhile, the gigs slackened up, so I had to go home and take care of my family. So I worked out on the docks, and that was a hard job, but they paid me for it. I was happy to have a job,” he says, never feeling like the universe owed him a living as a musician, however much anyone else might lament having those gifts buried under a hardhat for so long.
“I pray to St. Jude every day, not just around Christmas. When I was down and depressed, down and out, he helped me out of this hole” says Mr. Neville. "These classic songs, have been pumping blood to my heart .... They've been a part of my life. Singing them, especially in the aftermath of Katrina, was a deeply spiritual experience. They helped me get through. They gave me hope. And for me, music has always been about hope."
